awww this was hard… i wanted to go for virtuous but i’ve never read book with that type of hero. But in all honesty i LOVE brooding characters (they break hearts!) and makes the book ever so suspenseful.

Very true! Brooding heroes can add a lot of tension to a story–and so can bad boys 😉
      Thank you! 🙂

Oh my, this is difficult. You know I am not a romance person, but these hero “types” apply to pretty much any guy in fiction. Honestly, the only type I don’t particularly care for is the bad boy. His incredible, over-the-top cockiness drives me crazy, no matter what other redeeming qualities he has. Alphas can get annoying too, if they are too uptight and obnoxious.

What type do you think Earion is? You haven’t seen him much, but I think I am too close to identify accurately. I am leaning toward brooding, because he has an Everest-sized emotional wound he can’t get past, but he does his best to cover it up and act like he is in control. He is definitely not virtuous (ha!) or beta, and not a bad boy either… of course, as brutal and amoral as he can be, he falls squarely in antihero territory. He is very much a protector to his sister, but he is more dominant with his allies… So an alpha with a hidden brooding side? I don’t really know. He has some serious baggage, is ruthlessly amoral, and presents himself as calm, confident, and always in control, because deep down, he feels totally out of control and helpless. What do you think he is?

Anyway, obviously, as my most important male character, I designed him to be a compilation of many of my favorite male characteristics, as much as the plot and other characters would allow. However, I also tend to like beta guys a lot, and in fact, I am designing one as the next addition to my main cast at some point in the future…

Neat poll, and a useful one for this blog. Now I am curious: Which type is your favorite? 😉

My first guess would be brooding too, especially since he’s so private and mysterious, but I haven’t really seen his brutal side yet, so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see 😉

Well, I look forward to meeting your beta guy 🙂 And it’s a smart idea to take your favorite characters and combine them into one of yours. I’m going to try and do that more with my male MC.

Thank you! But I can’t really take credit for it, since a particularly smart friend of mine came up with it for me 😉 Oh, dear. You’re making me choose? Well, protectors always have the potential to be good characters. Bad boys and alphas can make things interesting. But sometimes, a virtuous hero can make my heart melt, and of course, that’s the kind of hero I’d want in reality!

Thank you for the poll idea, and for participating in so many of my blog posts!

Tough. It was a toss up between the protector and the bad boy. I like it when they’re combined. I can’t stand Beta males. They sound like wimps. What exactly is a brooding hero?

Brooding heroes are private and quiet and mysterious. A combo of protector and bad boy is definitely fun in fiction! Less so in real life 😉
