Question: Book Design

Before I was writing seriously and trying to get my own book published, I never considered the work that would go into the design of the book. When you look, there are so many different designs snuck into the corners of pages, options for page numbering, fonts, etc. One day, I went through the library pulling out fantasy and YA books. Many had designs from the cover image integrated into the pages or near chapter numbers. For example:

Michael Vey Prisoner cell 25Michael Vey Prisoner Cell 25

(Michael Vey–The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans)

The Alloy of Law by Brandon SandersonThe Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson

Authors often do something unique with their chapter number or title. Some spell out the number, some use the number symbol, and many have special symbols or designs just for their chapter heading.

Flamecaster

(Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima)

court of fives

(Court of Fives by Kate Elliott)

Book interior design

(The Winner’s Curse by Mary Rutkowski)

Now that I’ve given you a few examples, if you could design your own book, how would you design it? Which book designs do you like best?
