Book Review: Humilitas by John Dickson

Genre: Self-Help Non-Fiction

You’ll like this is you like: Healthy Relationships, High Self-Esteem, Humility, Improving Yourself, Improving Your Quality of Life, or Growth.

This book is so incredible. It talks about the power of humility and simple ways to work on achieving it. Before I read this book, I’d always thought humility was about comparison. Crazy, right? I was trying to think of myself as worse than everyone else, but that would result in low self-esteem, then I’d try to think of myself as better, and I’d suddenly go to the other extreme and become arrogant over whatever abilities I had. This book helped me realize that humility is selflessness. It’s focusing on others, rather than yourself. It’s not a comparison at all. In short:

“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”

-C.S. Lewis

After I finally got that, I stopped struggling as much with my self-esteem. I can think that I’m beautiful and talented, while still devoting my time and energy to others. This new mindset has helped me immensely. The book is very thorough and goes through the history of humility to inspiring stories of the humble. You might want to read it with a pen in hand to take notes or underline 🙂 I’d definitely recommend this for anyone who wants improved relationships or an improved life.
