The words tasted like acid in her mouth. How long would she have to maintain this ruse? She had made a huge mistake coming here, and now Arianna would pay dearly if she made even the slightest mistake. They had to believe she truly was the prince’s betrothed, and not just a shape-shifting thief who thought a wealthy, lovesick prince would make an easy target.

Who would have guessed the true bride disliked the prince just as much as she did? Now she would have to keep up the ruse until Nataline could find the real bride.

“When I get out of here,” she thought, “I will never take a person’s form without making sure I can find her again. And I will avoid heavily fortified castles with corrupt kings and disgusting princes like the plague.”

“If you love me, why do you keep coming up with excuses to delay our wedding?” the prince whined.

“Excuses?” She raised her eyebrows in fake horror. “How could you think such a thing? I am horribly sad that we are not yet married, but these delays were unavoidable. First there was my mother’s sudden illness, and now my uncle is on a journey. He will be back in a week, and then we can be married.”

The prince sighed melodramatically. “How *is* your mother, by the way?”

Arianna squinted, forcing tears to her eyes, and brushed them away. “She is better,” she sniffed, “but has not yet regained her full strength. How I have worried about her.” She hated this endless feigning of feelings.

The prince frowned. “While we are waiting for your uncle to return, would you like to visit her?”

The perfect excuse to get out of the castle and help with the search for the woman she was imitating!

“Of course,” he added, “I will want to come along and meet her.”
